sh!t

Unread post by Baseshakers »

jeep started making a weird noise that changed when accelerating/decelerating. rear pinion was loose, so i cranked down on it. still loose, so i opened up the diff with tony's help today. here's what i found...

Image

The two-pinion design of the elocker shows it's weakness. broke two of the teeth on a side gear, and one of them must have gotten between the ring/pinion teeth, loosening everything up. the ring gear is also chipped.

took the axle out, and i think it's bent:

now what? it doesn't make sense to put an elocker back in there, so i should go ARB. However, how bent is too bent? it may be time for a new axle if the tube is trashed. thoughts/opinions?

it will run a minimum of $1300 for the ARB and gears, and i'm doing my own gear setup. for $3200 i have a bolt in 60...

I'd shop around before ordering from there. Give Lou or Dom a call and see what they can get.

Go with the big boy ARB axle.

When was the last time you wheeled?

jon, for sure, i'll be calling those guys monday morning.
chris, it is tempting! last time i wheeled was fall crawl. no noises or any issues out of the rear, but i did tow a dead jeep a long way...
doug, already have alloys (which is probably why the locker broke and not the shafts) and i really like selectables while it's a DD.

Sounds like it's time to upgrade the rear to a stouter axle and locker.

It's hard to tell if a housing is bent with the naked eye.

Like Doug said, I would go with a Detroit. It's not bad in a DD and very strong.

Those are Chu's axles, I don't believe he has them anymore. I think he sold the whole rig.

The axle is straightened. However, Lou think it isn't worth putting any $ into it, even if I truss to prevent bending. Hmmm......

If it bent, it will bend again. I think I can truss it...
He doesn't like ARBs in the northeast. Seals and such.
