Re: Here I go again with another project!!!!
After all the rain, a wheeling weekend and uber sticky weather I finally got around to checking out some more stuff on Ol' Yeller's engine....
It's not often you can say that a blown up lifter might have actually saved an engine, but I think that was the case here!
After waging war on an upper bellhousing bolt, I had gotten the short block removed on Thursday. Friday night it was on a stand and it was time to tear it down to see what I could see....
Oil pan/oil pump: Not much in the way of sludge in the pan and the pump pick up tube only had a few bits of crud on the screen.
Main/rod bearings/crank: Not worn to hell but you could see bits of crud stuck in the bearing halves and the crank journals have some scoring that a fingernail can snag on.
Cam/lifters: The biggie! The bottoms of the lifters all looked O.K. Cam lobes have just the normal wear, journals all looked good, and cam bearings are all fine!!!!!!!
Bores: All look good, no scorring.
Pistons/rings/rods: Other than the carbon build up, all looks good! Rings are free, wrist pins don't have slop in the pistons.
For the heck of it I pulled the crank from Blue Cross' old block..... Main bearings and journals looked really good. Rod journals looked good but the rod bearings were worn out (and the wrist pin area of #2's piston was beat to hell!)
So my plan of attack is to clean the heck out of Ol' Yeller's block, use the crank and main bearings from Blue Cross, toss in a new set of rod bearings, use a new set of lifters and top it off with this....

Other than that, I'll need to install a new H2O pump and a clutch.

I recommend a Melling high volume (not high pressure) oil pump. $70 for better (IMO) valve train oiling.

IT IS ALIVE! ALIVE I TELL YOU!!! I AM A GOD!!!!!!! Fired up on the first try Might have to fiddle with the cam sensor but I won't be sure 'till I can actually drive it.
Now to take care of a couple mechanical (sway bar links) and cosmetic (body) issues.
