Need a squirrel doctor

On the weekend run my Heep picked up an angry squirrel. Looking for the noise today, she's usually quiet. Until I turn the wheel or rev the engine, and then she's back. Annoyed and angry

Found the problem is with my fan and/or water pump. There's lateral play... a lot of it. Took a quick video to show what I mean. I've never worked on a viscous fan asmy and I don't think that's it, I think the problem is with the water pump bearing. As far as I can tell, the asmy bolts to the water pump and I'm assuming that goes through and drives the impeller

So my question, Heep doctors, is this.... what's your prognosis? Viscous clutch asmy or you think the pump is the culprit

If the pump has to be swapped, I can't tell if the PS pump needs to be nudged out of the way. And finally, my SM has real good illustrations on a 2.5L belt removal but I can't see where the adjusting screw is to loosen the tensioner thing on my 4.0 This is probably a Saturday project and it looks like I'll miss my favorite run this weekend

That's your H20 pump Carl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fix it ASAP!!!!!!!!! You do NOT want your 2000 engine to overheat or else you might end up looking for a new head!!!!!!

You might have to move the PS pump (at least it's easier than the AC pump).

2000 uses a spring loaded tensioner for the belt. There's no adjusting screw. Look below the alternator and you'll see the tensioner arm with a pulley on it. There's a 1/2" square hole for a ratchet or breaker bar to go into to move the arm. Rotate it clockwise to release tension on the belt.

Def the H2O pump, shocked it's not leaking everywhere. As long as it's like my '05 you don't have to move the PS pump. Longest part of the job is scraping off the old gasket, otherwise it's a pretty quick swap.

Carl, you'll need a big adjustable wrench to remove the fan and clutch assy. Best way to do it is put the adj on the hex shaft pointing straight up, put a long 1/2" wrench on one of the WP pulley bolts, give the end of the adj wrench a sharp blow or two (so it turns toward the PS of Jeep) to crack it free. After it's free it should spin right off. Of course you'll also have to remove the fan shroud at the same time.

I'm hoping this also cures the kind-of-new rumble that I've been getting, about 20 seconds after starting. SOUNDS like a bearing but I couldn't figure out why if it was so quiet when I started her up, then start rumbling for a minute or two and then get quiet again after a few minutes. If it was an engine bearing, I'm figuring it would be loudest when it was starved for oil. I was 'looking' for the source with my trusty stethoscope but never really got a handle on it. Really hope this was it

I'm not moving or starting my Heep again, not until I have everything repaired. The thought of launching my fan into the radiator..... kind of makes...... me........ ........

While I'm in there, this is a good time to replace my AC compressor clutch and finish my OBA project. I'll miss some wheelin this weekend, but the Crawl is right around the corner!

So this is reverse thread? Or is that just to break it free? New pump is standard thread but that doesn't mean anything

Already stripped one bolt...... .... but the pulley has so much lateral play, it's tough to keep a wrench on there. Can't find a 1/2" box end that's long enough, so I'm looking at picking up a 1/2" crows foot and use a 3/8" breaker bar. Hopefully it'll bite and not strip

It's standard thread. The holding it in place and giving a sharp blow or two is just to break the fan free.
