Metallurgical madness

Unread post by Carl McFly »

My aluminum valve caps decided to weld themselves to my valve stems. Found this out on the NEA snow run, I could only air down 3 tires. 3 covers were only stuck, came off after some persuasion. The 4th cover assimilated my valve stem. They are one now.

Bottom line, is there a quick and dirty way to get that aluminum cover off or should I just go to a garage and have them break the wheel down and install a new stem?

Two pairs of slip joints or Robogrips should do it.

Carl, I warned you about that at Jeff and Eve's tech day didn't I? Better bust out the dremel but be careful.

Ditto on the dremel.
Had the same problem with the Aluminum caps on my TJ when I bought it :o

Gotta be careful if you try two pairs of pliers. You can separate the brass valve stem from the rubber body if you muscle it too much
Ask me how I know.... :o

If dremel doesn't work Carl, I'm right up in North Reading and can whip the tire off and replace the valve stem for you.
