Granted it gets squirrelly in deep snow or greasy mud but I've gotten used to the way it handles. It also "clicks" when going around a corner when not engaged. My Detroit Soft Locker for the rear Dana 44 is being shipped as I speak since I am still OPEN in the back.

Not replacing my 3.73 gears that I installed 2 years ago - going to rebuild my transfer case to a 4:1 ratio with either a Tera Low or JB Conversions LoMax kit. Good luck with your final choice Amanda!

X2 Carol! Can't wait for Big Brown to drop off your locker and my Chrome Alloy Shafts & Locker. Next upgrade will be 35's for both our rigs! Gonna be a fun wheeling season Carol!

I did the Lomax set for my 300 as it not only is 100.00 cheaper but the gears are billet steel and there is no known set of breakage behind any horse power ! Speaks for itself ! FjR68

I have a L P Dana 30 with a locker and 35s . Its more how you drive ? Biggest thing Ive heard is the more the wheel is turned and you apply throttle and how much ,puts the axle U-joints at risk. FjR68

I used to go mudding and I've done that for years. Since I have a commuter car, this isn't my primary car anymore. So, more wheeling! But it has to be comfortable to drive to all the runs and vacation spots.

Dom said that they just an Eaton e locker. He said he could do $500 + parts to do front gears and rear with locker ARB or Eaton $600-800 + parts if mounting compressor switches and all . (seriously, I think he was talking gibberish because I am still confused about what he was actually trying to say... ) He also auggested 4.56 gears.

If you want to run 35" tires I think you'd be happier with 4.88 if you have a manual. I have 4.56 and an auto with 33" tires, and that seems to work out really well. An auto is more forgiving though. If you look at going 4:1 in the t-case sticking with 4.56 would be fine either way.

I've been running 35s with 3.73 (obv with no locker) for almost 3 years now, before I had 33s.

I also have an automatic Jeep. (haha). I am guessing thats why Dom recommended 4.56 and not 4.88???

Front: $500 labor, $200+/- for gears, and about $100 for the install kit

Rear: $700 labor, $800-$1000 for the locker, $200 for gears, $100 for setup kit

It'll be about $2500 - $3000

Hahahaha thanks, Joe! cleared the air.

I'd rather do the rear only. Jeez, I'm so picky!

If you're looking to save some coin, stay with the gears you have, rebuild the rear trash-lok and get a Lockright/Spartan for the front.

I'm going to be installing a Spartan locker into the Dana 44 of my my kid's XJ.

Amanda, I am running 35's, 4.56 gears and ARB's front and rear. Burned out the compressor in October and replaced it with the new bigger / better ARB compressor. Dana 30 front with alloy shafts, and a Ford 8.8 rear. All works really well, but it was expensive. Using my Jeep to get me to the trail which is usually a 2 to 3-hour drive one way, run the trails, then drive the 2 to 3-hours home so it is a designed dual purpose rig. That's what works for me. Obviously only you know what you want. And Joe too. He knows everything.

Id say that is a good price. Lou wanted about 1500 to do the gears only in one axle for my TJ when I snapped the R&P on my TJ... that was just R&P no locker etc. Mitchel Diff charged me about 2500 for re-gearing both axles to 4.88s....

If it were me, oh wait I'm regearing soon too. I'm going from 4:10 to 4:88 with 36" tires. I also just went from a 3spd automatic to a 5spd manual. I run Detroits F&R, but like Frank I have manual hubs in the front.

If I was doing a regear in your situation, I'd do an auto locker in the rear (you'll hardly know it's there with the auto trans), and go with a selectable up front. OX or E-locker. 4:56 in both axles with your 35s.

Seriously loving everyones opinion in what they have.

Doug - I haven't heard people who who an auto locker say whether or not they have an automatic or manual transmission! That little piece of information could make or break a decision!

I will look into some prices, but Dom's estimate doesn't seem to bad to me!

Lesson Learned: I was advised to go with 4.88 gears and 35's and I went with 4.56 gears and 33's. Now running 35's. With my stock 2.72 T-case my overall gear ratio is not low enough for my taste. Now I am looking at swapping out my T-case or modifying it to get to a 4:1 low range. Would have been cheaper in the long run to have gone with the original recommendation. Live and learn.
