Re: Exhaust leak
all gone! (i think) at least the initial startup tick is gone. i filled it with 5W-30 and a bottle of MMO, i'm sure that didn't hurt either. once i fix the exhaust leak i'll really be able to tell if the lifter is happy.

Re: Exhaust leak
I found the leak, it is a cracked exhaust manifold. What brand is recommended? Still a daily driver, so I'd like to get something that will last.

Think that will hold? Not stainless, right?

Re: Exhaust leak
Stock, late model 4.0s use a 2pc cast iron exhaust manifold so welding it may or may not hold. Looks like it's time to cruise eBay!

Re: Exhaust leak
If you buy some cast rod, you could burn it in with a stick welder (or batteries).
Preheating the welding location is highly recommended. Have a buddy preheat with MAP gas and weld her up as soon as he/she pulls away.
I also recommend grinding the crack into a slight "V".

Re: Exhaust leak
Is there any mig wire that would work well? I have a stick welder but it's only 120v and pretty weak. I do have a good torch now however.

Ha! What did I say?! Check your exhaust manifold...
How do your manifold bolts look? If they don't look so bad and look like they'll come out easily, people seem to like the 2 piece manifold that can be bought on ebay for cheap.

Re: Exhaust leak
Yup, that is exactly the same thing that I had to deal with. The weld of my manifold has held up fine so far. Has been a couple of years.

Re: Exhaust leak
IMO, you could do a nice job with a 120V welder and 3/32" rod.Baseshakers wrote:Is there any mig wire that would work well? I have a stick welder but it's only 120v and pretty weak. I do have a good torch now however.

Re: Exhaust leak
Exhaust leak should be visible after running for a couple of hours. I have a bolt together exhaust from headers back, anywhere it leaked after I installed it had a bit of black soot coming from the leak.

Re: Exhaust leak
Ryan has ***slightly*** modified his engine bay. If you can find the headers in under all the add ons you will be using a boroscope to do it... You can wash the soot off the headers with his on board shower, or weld the headers with the dual battery set up and his welding stuff...ArticRubi wrote:Exhaust leak should be visible after running for a couple of hours.
