Ford 8.8

Unread post by KevinP »

Is there a difference between the 8.8 in a 6 cyl or 8 cyl ? I found a few of each and the 6 cyl ones are cheaper. So i just need to know if the difference is just limited slip and not axle or bearing size. I plan on using an OX locker anyway.

Any info is much appreciated. :)

Depends on which vehicle it comes out of. The Explorer version uses larger, 31 spline axle shafts. Other Ford models have an 8.8 with a smaller shaft. Some have different widths. I'm not sure about bolt pattern.

For Jeep applications I think the Explorer version is the "preferred" version.

Gear ratio is probably also different (V6 vs. V8), but if you're going to swap in an OX presumably you're going to regear, so that won't matter.

Lots of info about this axle is out there... Google is your friend.

Just make sure it's from an Exploder. Those have the closest width to the Jeeps, have the correct 5 on 4.5" wheel pattern, '95-up came with disc brakes (although the parking brakes suck) and use the larger 31 spline shafts along with larger axle shaft bearings.

YJ's are super easy to do an 8.8 swap into.
You can't bolt on experience!!!!!!

What is your plan to build the axle?

Unless you're ordering an axle with all the components installed (e.g. locker, gears, brakes, spring perches, etc...) that will be "bolt in", you may want to try buying local (the ones you're looking at don't have the extras) and save some $.

You can get a stock Explorer 8.8 rear end from either a junk yard (pick-n-pull) or from someone parting out an Explorer if you do a little driving for a lot less $ then these guys are asking. You may need to replace the brake discs / pads, but it will be basically the same housing and get you the right shafts / bolt pattern. When you do new gears you're going to do new bearings at the same time... Depending on where you look you can get it for $150-$250, and you won't have to pay shipping if you pick it up...

There are also local 4x4 shops which can sell you an 8.8 with all the stuff you want (gears, locker, etc...) built to your specs and will provide the housing. Have you looked into these options?
