Exhaust leak

Unread post by Baseshakers »

Big thank you to Tony for helping me out this weekend. New RMS and oil pump are in. The underside of my jeep has never looked cleaner! And i think it's about 5 lb lighter from all the crud we scraped off.

But the exhaust still leaks. And I can't figure out from where. Put my hand all around the manifold and downpipe feeling for leaks, nothing. Any good tricks for determining where it's coming from?

strategically placed canaries....

I would think soapy water may help as long as the pipes are cool, how are your headers?

Not sure if it is worth it but most shops can do a smoke test and find the leak, usally about $60.

Wait for a cold day (this weekend) and have a buddy hold a gloved hand over the tailpipe just after you start it. You'll find the leak.

A couple of years ago I had an annoying exhaust leak. Turned out to be at the exhaust manifold. Needed to be welded but has been fine since.

go borrow a fog machine from a friend and hook it to the exhaust pipe (with duck tape, the handyman's secret weapon!!!)
and let it run, the fog will blow out the whole and be detectable... or it will like like you are having a fire under your rig if you have allot of leaks

basically a day. we took our time as there was a ton of oil/dirt nastiness caked on everywhere that needed to be cleaned up. we also removed the front exhaust section (for easier access) and painted it, so that took some time as well. also did the oil pump, but that only took 3 minutes to swap. having two people is helpful for getting the oil pan back up.

Did you break any bolts for the oil pan or anything?
