Speaking of OBA......

OBA has been on my wish list for a while. And now it's time. I found the following article, just by luck it's on a 2000 TJ. I have factory air (never, ever use it) so the compressor piece is covered. I have a few questions for the people with experience installing OBA

Does the write up look complete? It seems to be, but having no experience, I don't know. I have an air tank, 1.5 or 2 gallons I think, from an old air compressor. Is that enough? Also looking at mounting options. There's not a lot of open real estate under my hood, where did you mount your air tank?

This is going to sound weird coming from me, but if I had a working A/C system in my Jeep, I would keep it and run an electric compressor like the Viair 450c.

I run a 400c in my YJ. It fit's perfectly on top of the driver's inner fender. I'll be running a Viair in my buggy too.

One suggestion...
You may want to use an in-line oiler on the inlet side of the compressor instead of re-circulating the oil captured in the water/oil seperator. That way you aren't lubing the compressor with the dirty oil and moisture.
A hand throttle is necessary to kick up the RPM's while you are airing up.

You should yank the condensor out to let your radiator breather easier too.

Joe I currently have the 400PA model and it does great, was looking at selling it and going with the new ARB dual rate system. I have read the specs and it appears that the new ARB system and a york puts out just about the same CFM. However I would still love to see a head to head. Would like to get something that can re-seat a tire with a blown bead, which I thought only an air tank or York setup could do.

I've built a couple OBA systems... If you want to go electric you need to look at startup surge on the motor and make sure your switches will handle it.

My system uses a 12v / 1hp motor I pulled from a portable compressor.

Generally I find most of the cost is not in the compressor... Is in the misc bits you need to tie it together if you don't start with an "all in one" system the has the pressure regulation built in.

I purchased a $49 3 gallon el-Cheapo air compressor from harbor freight . I seperated the parts which included the electronic pressure switch , regular , pressure gauge, and a few assorted fittings along with the 3 gallon tank
92 YJ 6Cyl > 3 " lift, ford 8.8 SOA on XJ springs with Aussie out back, D30 with alloy 30's and ARB up front 4:56. 35 MTR's, 10K Winch, SYE ,traction bar, onBd Air and lots of gently used skids

Daves OBA gets a work out every time the man is on the trail. At MM he used it to fill his 33s at least 5X in under 3 min each time from full flat. :lol:

Ive seen him pull the wheel off his heep with an impact wrench in NASCAR like speeds and drill etc..
