watch out for black ice...
On the way to Turkey Trot... I slid on black ice going 10 mph UNDER the posted speed limit and almost hit an oncoming car head-on. I swirved, then spun out, hitting a rock wall and an old man's mail box..
After flipping out, I moved my truck to the other side of the road. The old man, who's mail box I hit, drove his car to the end of the driveway and was asking about his mailbox! "who is going to fix this?" "what about my mailbox". Really? What about my truck!
Someone called the police while I was still looking for my cell phone that went flying into the back of the truck. The local police guys were nice and were making fun of the old man complaining about his mailbox. They even knew who he was by name, in other words, one of those complainers!
HOWEVER, the police told me that there was ANOTHER accident right around the corner a few hours earlier! Really.. someone else slid on ice and yet the town didn't sand the roads? There is clearly something wrong with this picture..
Anyways, I drove the truck home, called the insurance company, and hoping that they don't total the truck..
Here are a few pictures.. If anyone has any spare parts please let me know!
where I skidded..
the mailbox
if you look closely.. the cop is smiling..
The door doesn't even close..
I need a new vent... I broke this one during the crash..
I also need a passenger seat..

Oooo, That sucks! I bet they total it- thats a costly fix. Maybe you'll be able to buy it back from the insurance co. You should find a set of cheap tires/wheels to throw on IF they do total and take it.
BTW, Looks like the mailbox is to close to the road. Tell the old man your going to contact the building inspector and report it.

I'm hoping that if I tell the appraiser whats in the truck that it would add value. Key word is hoping.
If they declare it a totalled, I would want to see if I could revoke my claim since getting body panels can be cheap if they are aftermarket.. And just do the work without going to an auto body shop..

Sorry for the Jeep, but I'm glad you're okay! I bet it's totaled. It may be worth buying it back as is from the insurance co if it's totaled. I'm not sure you can just revoke the claim after it's declared totaled. midniteryder is in the insurance business and may have something to add.

Re: watch out for black ice...
Glad you are ok but I think they are going to total it too, sorry. The tub is a single piece so all you can do is replace the whole thing. You could pound out the corner and cover it with armor but since the door won't close it means the whole tub is tweaked. Best bet is talk to Dom or Lou and see if you can find an entire tub. They could then do a swap, if your frame is ok. Which it might not be since your tub got tweaked so bad. Do you have a body lift in it? If you do that may help protect the frame, the bolts would twist and bend preventing the frame from taking a lot of the hit.
You may also be able to buy it back and then strip all of your parts so you don't have to rebuy them. Most insurance compaines will not allow you to remove anything once they process the claim however, ask me how I know. They may let you strip it and then they will appraise it but then the value goes down and you won't get as much when they total it.

You could bang and pull out the damage as best you can and just rivet/weld on some heavy corner guards. Easy and cheap fix and it'll really hold up well to the next mailbox!

That sucks!
You may want to find out if there is a police report on the earlier accident... May be useful to have that to prove the road was icy, in case they want to call it you fault...

Glad you're OK! No doubt that's a total loss. I'd wait for a detailed appraisal and if the frame isn't bent then yeah, I'd look at buying it back from the insurance company
But if your windshield is out of whack too, you may be all twisted up and it may not be worth it. To early to tell but wow the important thing is that you're OK!

Re: watch out for black ice...
OMG
Was wondering why you didn't make the run today.
Sounds like you are OK.
Looking at the pics my guess is the roll cage got tweeked when the corner hit and the DS of the cage is bent forward causing the twisting of the windshiled and the gap by the DS door frame.
I agree with others. Someone need to go thru it to see what else if bent & bad.
To be honest I think it's a total loss too.

Wow Amanda. sorry we got cut off when I was talking to you to see if you were OK. Phone was ringing off the hook yesterday on my way to the trot and i didnt realize this happend on your way to the event. did you get checked out at the hospital? from what I saw you took a nasty hit and may have lingering issues that start croping up when the adrenlain drops off. Glad to see you seem to be OK and sorry about your jeep!

Re: watch out for black ice...
We were wondering where you were. Unfortunately, as is the consensus, I think it is a total as well. Jeeps can be rebuilt or re-purchased, but I am so glad that you were not hurt.
Speed costs money, how slow do you want to go?
