84cj wrote:John, thanks for the offer, but After talking to Lou, there are a lot of unknowns, such as, probably need a new drive shaft, the brake booseter may not have enough capacity, not to mention clearance, my gas tank skid already has a dent in it from my 20, I could only image the clearance issues with the 60's housing, the e-brake would have to be figured out and so on.

The reason the price is so high from Mitchell is because it would be turn key, drop off and pick up when finished. I could save 400-500 if I delivered the axle by itself, but I have no way of doing that...
Curtis, a Ford 9" would use the same yolk, e-brake, and the center is roughly the same size.

If you're dead set on polishing the turd, then rent a truck from Home Depot or something and save a bunch of $. I'm almost done my head gasket on my truck and could pick your axle up for you when it's completed. Mitchell is a stone's throw from where I work in Worcester.

Have you looked into finding a Dana 44 from a 1986 CJ-7? They're out there, will bolt right in, e-brake will not be an issue, niether will the yoke.

I do appreciate all of your comments and suggestions and if I were to start all over, ( with zero dollars tied up into the AMC20) I would build a Dana 44 of a ford 9" and not look back. But it is what it is and if I can eliminate the weakest link of the axle by increasing the size of the tube walls, I think that is what I am going to do.

The time will come when you will realize putting money into the Model 20 is a waste. Cut your losses and build something worth the $$.

I hear what you guys are saying, and the extreme trails at Rausch did cause a lot of problem for me, but since then, ( the May 2011 Rausch trip) I have put enough money and new parts in it that I am to far gone to start a new.

I think the 20 has done well for me for a long time, and I have never had a problem with the one piece shafts, and I like to think I am fixing the weakest part of the axle, the tubes. Soon, they will be 3/4 inch thick. However, ......When the day comes, I will think to myself, Doug AND Joe told me so...

Hopefully that day wont be for a long, long time.
