WTF - When it rains it pours
Yesterday, I power washed the mud off the jeep and then went around and lubed all fittings, including removing one end of the drive shaft and hitting the ball joint of my CV shaft. Then, I parked her in the garage. Well, today, I came home from the gym around 1:30 and there was a pool of oil under her.
The oil was dripping from out from under its skid plate. Not sure how or what is going on, but I'm not to happy considering I was on the phone today with Mitchell to see about fixing my bent rear axle. My wife already thinks I spend to much money on my jeep, wait till she hears the thing broke in the garage all by itself...
I guess this is better than happening while driving, I could have blown the engine for sure.
Sometimes jeeps suck!
PS I'm finally going to put a locker in the front...a lock-right is on order from Randy's R&P. Thanks Kurt for the open carrier, without it I probably would not have moved forward with the locker.

I would weld that bastid skid right to the sides of the oil pan.
Sucks about the bent axle. Not surprised though. That's an AMC 20, right? Some CJ guys who invested in their 20 sometimes upgrade to a Wagoneer (FSJ) 20, because the tubes are stronger.

Yep, that little skid spot welded to the oil pan from the factory was a good idea in theory. Had that happen to me way back when I had my CJ. Basically ended up doing what Joe said to do. Pulled the pan, knocked things straight, welded all around the damn thing, then gave the welds a good coating of RTV just to be sure.
You can't bolt on experience!!!!!!

Thankfully it happened in my garage.
I talked with Mitchell about re-tubing my model 20 and they said it would be in the $1,000 to $1,200 range. Since I have the gears and 2 sets of axle shafts and the new perches and high clearance u-bolt kit I think I will stick with the 20.
Would you think they could reuse the perches and shock mount tabs or should I just supply new ones when I get around to scheduling the fix?
Kurt, the rear diff took a quart and a half yesterday, sorry for the puddle...

John, thanks for the tip using RTV around the skid, I will certainly do it.

Jeebus man. Build a 9" (already 5x5.5 bolt pattern) and call it a day. That's a lot of ching in a 20.

John, thanks for the offer, but After talking to Lou, there are a lot of unknowns, such as, probably need a new drive shaft, the brake booseter may not have enough capacity, not to mention clearance, my gas tank skid already has a dent in it from my 20, I could only image the clearance issues with the 60's housing, the e-brake would have to be figured out and so on.
The reason the price is so high from Mitchell is because it would be turn key, drop off and pick up when finished. I could save 400-500 if I delivered the axle by itself, but I have no way of doing that...

how much does your axle weigh? I have a basket that can go into a reciver hitch rated for 500lbs... I can bring it to the fall meeting and loan it to you if you have a DD that can accept a 2" receiver... I dont think that a D20 can be all too heavy.... I put a d30 and D35 in my wifes mini van back in the day as well, she sold it ages ago but its doable to transport the axle w/o the jeep...
