Q on 36mm axle nut and THANK YOU Ryan!

Unread post by Carl McFly »

First off, BIG THANKS to Ryan for helping me replace my 4 ball joints today. He took the time to help me out, even with Rausch Creek right around the corner and stuff still on his own to do list

Neither front wheel bearing has any play, but the drivers doesn't rotate smoothly (doesn't make any noise but you can feel it kind of bind) and the passengers side turns but it isn't happy about it. I have alloy shafts to install and questionable wheel bearings. Sounds like a match made in heaven! Pull the whole asmy and replace with alloys and new bearings

But the 36mm nut on the drivers side is one with the universe. And axle. We tried heat and a BF-breaker bah but no luck. So it's time to ask an expert. Does anyone know the dimensions of that nut and / or maybe it's a dealer only piece? Being a 36mm nut, is the internal diameter standard? I think it's 27mm ID, if the D30 shaft is 1.16 inches. And with something that size, would they have a choice of fine and coarse threads?

My plan is to pull both asmys and bolt on new unit bearings and alloys but to do that, either that 36mm nut comes off, or I just get a replacement nut. I'd like to do this before the JJ this week but worst case, I throw them in the back of me Heep and replace them on the way there ;)

Carl,

You can buy new 36 mm axle nuts from NAPA. I believe they even come with the metal castle "hat" for the cotter pin.

Stubborn 36 mm nuts usually come off best using a good impact gun rather than a breaker bar.

great Kurt, ty! We tried a big impact gun. And a torch. And a breaker bar. I'll check NAPA tomorrow, I have a couple around me

Soak it with PB Blaster for few more days, then try impact gun again.

Going to do that Jon. I soaked the ball joints with PBB since Wednesday. And they slid right out
