My bad day

It was Miller time tonight. Actually, more like Molson. Talk about vehicular bad luck: Read on!

Actually, I've had a bad week. Felt a stumble in my truck earlier this week. Went home and pulled a P0306 code. Mis-fire on #6. Ohm out the COP (coil on plug), and injector. Both are within spec. Compression test went to 90 - uh oh.
Also found coolant on the plug -> yep, you guessed it: Head gasket. I'm pissed. That gasket was done at 62,xxx miles under warranty for a TSB about metal shavings on the block during assembly. Well, I'm at 92K and my extended warranty ran out 2K miles ago. Dropped the truck off at my deal to confirm (who are actually pretty good to work with). They pulled the intake to check for a leak "that sometimes happens there". Looking at minimum $1500 - $1700. If the head is cracked I'm screwed. If the block is cracked, I'm fawked. I had them throw it back together and I'm probably picking it up tomorrow AM. The service manager offered 15% off the repair. I guess they really don't have to give me anything, so it's better than nothing.


Angie's Malibu needs an exhaust, which is a welded system (i.e you need to replace the whole thing). The two flex joints up front rotted and it leaks. Only a handful of supply sources carry it, and it's about $1400 just for the parts (that's what you get when you build a Chevy/Saab on the same chassis). Inspection sticker just ran out and I'm going to weld in universal flex joints for $44.00. Just need the time.


I've been driving Michaela's XJ to work. On the way home today, I was cut off and slammed on my brakes. Well, apparently the driver's lower control arm mount was rotted worse than I thought and decided to break completely off. I nearly drove off the side of the road in downtown Worcester. The only thing that kept me going straight, was the the fact that I'm running 33's with no lift and trimmed fenders. The driver's tire hit the inner fender, so the axle could only turn so far. If I had the stock 215/75r15's, the tire would have allowed more room before bottoming out and would have tossed me into parked cars and PEOPLE. When I came to a stop, I was a nervous fawking wreck.
So, what to do. I coach soccer and had our first practice tonight. I had a ratchet strap, but didn't think it would hold. Low and behold, I found a plastic bag with a length of chain! I also found a handful of spare bolts (had cleaned the XJ for Michaela). Ratchet strapped the control arm back in place and chained her up. Released the strap and headed home. The chain kept the axle located and tire out of the fender, but I couldn't hit the brakes too hard, because she'd still pull. 70% of your braking comes from the front, and with the borken link, she had a lot of pull. I drove home using limited foot and a lot of parking brake. Thank God the rear brakes work well.

When I made it home, Angie had a Scout meeting, so I'm not forced to drive the YJ. 38's with no fender flares and flat tow trailer lights. I took back roads and didn't have a problem.


So, what does this vent mean? I'm not sure. Only that I've had a very bad week. I'm going to concentrate on Angie's Malibu first, get a sticker, and then fab some new lower control arm mounts for the XJ and weld them in. I think I have a couple of TJ or XJ low pinion housings I could cut them off too. I think I'll do both sides. :handgestures-thumbupright: As far as the truck goes, I think I'm going to trade it in. Definitely don't have the coin to get what I really want right now. What I really need is a decent commuter. Been actually thinking about getting a regular car. We'll see. Angie found a 2008 Liberty that's in real nice shape. Why a Liberty? Well, the mileage ratings aren't too bad and we can still tow the camper. I don't have $43,000 kicking around for a new F250 crew.

So, we'll see. At least it's a nice weekend. :crazy:

That really sucks.

Think of it this way though anyone with less skills then you would really really be screwed. I don't know how to do a pressure test. Can't weld in exhaust pipe. Never would have thought or known how to chain an axle back into position.

Wow that really stinks! Glad you made it out OK. Im guessing you were a boyscout Joe "be prepared" seems to be your motto!

Thanks guys. I guess growing up a motor head (and slightly on the poor side) helped out. Fix it through necessity.

Thanks for the offer Frank. I have some spare arms in the shed, but the actual arm itself is in awesome shape. The axle isn't bad either, it's just those damn lower mounts that were worse than I noticed. We all get caught with our pants down. I should have checked those mounts more thoroughly.
I have a spare TJ front 30 out back I'm going to trace the mounts to make a cardboard template. No sense cutting up a good housing - just in case.

I picked up the truck this AM. They didn't even write up any paperwork and their "check" was a freebie. That was very nice of them. I think any other dealer would have charged me 3 hours of labor. The funny thing is, the codes haven't come back and there isn't any smoke (today anyway).

I know you guys may think of me retarded for saying this, but I've been thinking about getting a commuter. I save about $150 a month driving Angie's car to work, but she's getting old too (the car, not my wife - yet LOL). I used to have brand loyalty, but that went out the door a few years ago.
The best bang for the buck I've found is the Hyundai Elantra. Well equipped with 29 city / 40 highway is about $17K.

That would put me without a tow rig for a bit, but as busy as I've been, I haven't wheeled much this year anyway. Michaela will be in college soon enough and Alex and I are big into Scouting. I've also been playing drums again - possibly looking for weekend gig's when I can.
I figure next year, we can shop around for a new tow rig, or go the older route. I've always had a hankering for a 80's to 1993 Dodge Ram. I'd love to get one with a Cummin's and 5 speed. Even a 360 powered rig would be cool. Cheap and easy to fix.

Anyway, I'd better get moving. Talk soon.

Thanks man. Yeah, I grew up in scouting and made it all the way to Eagle. I'm in the Order of the Arrow and a Knight of Baden Powell too. Michaela is working on her Girl Scout Gold Award (= Eagle Scout) and I hope that Alex makes it all the way some day.

I was defintely put to the test yesterday though, as with all the miles I've driven for work or otherwise, I've never been in a position where I was pointed at people. I can't even remember what the hell I did. In a way, it was like playing drums. I just did things and moved.

Despite all the car trouble this week. I was defintely a little more thankful :pray:

Joe - Hyundai Elantra's are a nightmare for repairs... best bang for your buck is a Honda Civic (just not the 2001). Mark my words, you will in the end regret buying a Elantra..

damn Joe sorry about your bad awful day!

And commuter car? You won't hear me bashing you! I'm all for brand loyalty but I'm also all about common sense and not a lot of Jeep products fall into the "wow this is a great commuter!" category

I can't say Chris is definitely wrong, but that's because I don't speak in absolutes. My daughter had an Elantra and for 4 years, all we did was change the oil. It made one unscheduled trip to the dealer for some sensor but that's IT. For 4 years. And that was covered under the 'are-you-kidding-me-100,000-miles??' warranty. Now she has a Santa Fe and same thing, 4 years, one or two unscheduled visits. And my wife's Sana Fe? Bought used with under 40k (and a power sun roof, leather, etc, etc) - almost 4 years, NO problems

Now I'm not saying Chris didn't have a hard time with an Elantra. I'm sure he did. But I don't believe you can take one experience and propagate that to an entire line up. Good or bad. My son has a Civic he bought new and it just fell out of the factory warranty. And he has another year to pay on it. Same thing, 4 years, one unscheduled visit to the dealer. IMHO, both car lines are excellent

I actually saw something in one of the off road mags about a turbo diesel swap for a YJ that gets 43mpg.... :music-rockout:
im sure its too good to be true and would cost more than a hemi but it sounds like a sweet idea...

I saw that YJ at SEMA last year. You could tell who the HP guys were and who the wheelers were. HP guys loved the idea and the 4WD guys were asking the d30/d35 question also. I think they have swaped them out now though for a d44 front and rear. Not 100% sure about it.

Sweet looking Jeep in person though. If I had a spare $16,000 around I would do the swap. :)

Sorry to hear about such a bad week . Good news is there is no snow on the ground to hamper the repairs...
If you get in a real pinch you always get a moped :-).
Lets hope all your bad luck hit at once and now you have clear sailing .....

Update:

Finished the Malibu Y pipe. Pulled the whole damn'n exhaust off. Found a crack on the inlet/outlet pipes at the resonator. Welded both up. Picked up a new stainless flex pipe ($11.79) and welded it in. Ahhhhh - nice and quiet!

Fabbed some lower control arm mounts for the XJ. I used 1/8" plate with a template made from a spare TJ 30. Burned them in and added some additional gussets. Tossed in a new muffler, so I can finally hear the AM radio again (<- yes, AM radio LOL).

Up next - my first head gasket on a Ford Mod motor. I'm probably going to do both sides with new Felpro's, as IMO the factory gaskets suck. I might also pick up some headers while I'm at it to add some go.

Been cutting wood like a bastid too. Looking into building a log splitter. Anyone have a spare I beam?......

Actually, I have a couple chucks of I beam that have been sitting around for years!!!!! If the boss man doesn't want them around any more, you're free to get them!!!!!!!!!!
