Found out what's wrong with my OX!!!!

Unread post by johnsxj »

My OX locker had been acting up the past few runs I was on to the point where it would no longer engage

Went to take a look see and this is what I found................

Image
What's missing in this picture :?:

Oh, here's all those bolts :o :o :o :o
Image

And what they did to the bearing cap

And the ring gear
Image

AND the oil slinger on the pinion

I might be able to salvage the plate on the OX, and it's time to find a new set of 4.56 gears and a master install kit :? :?

Better to have found it now and not when it grenaded on the road or trail.

Will you be able to re-use the bearing caps?

Ordered a new R&P yesterday, did some scrounging in the garage and found I have enough new parts to make my own install kit (an XJ 30 and a TJ 44 use the same inner pinion bearing!)
The bearing caps will live with a little file work, and I think the end cap on the OX will live enough if I can get my hands on a spot mill to clean down the bolt pockets.

Wow - that was a disaster in the making. Aren't those bolts supposed to have red loctite on them?

Yes, red locktite is the general "rule of thumb"...

Nope, the cap bolts don't see the vibration and shock loading that ring gear bolts do.
