Welding 101.... on me Heep

Unread post by Carl McFly »

Ryan's always upgrading his rig and I'm always finding probs with mine. We live a half mile apart. He's got a heated garage, 220V MIG, plasma, angle grinder and air tools. And I have.......... time. It's a symbiotic match made in Heep heaven :D

So today we work on his suspension and Ryan agree's to help me patch some rot on my frame / LCA mount, out back. Of course once I started cleaning it up, it was more work. Not real bad, ended up with a 1/2 inch gap in my frame, above the LCA mount, after it was cleaned and ground out. Used his plasma to cut a 1/4 inch thick steel plate to cover the hole (using plasma isn't as easy as Ryan makes it look!)

Then I cut another plate to bridge the LCA mount and frame patch, make it really strong. And welded the second plate on, all by my lonesome. May not seem like a big deal, except all that I know about welding, I learned in a 5 minute welding tutorial I found on the web

Thanks for the help Carl, glad we could get your heep patched up! For a "web-welder" I was quite impressed with your stitch welds! That mount isn't going anywhere.

Looks great Carl. The best part of welding yourself is increasing your experience for trail repairs.

See you on Sat!

Next up, you have to weld barefoot, in a T shirt, using two batteries and a US nickel.

the bad uphill on the base plate was when my ratty, torn jeans caught on fire. good times.

i've welded everything from sheet metal to 3/8" and even aluminum with the optional spool gun. awesome machine.
