D30 outer pinion bearing HP vs LP size?

Unread post by ChrisD »

Please let me know if you have been down this road before.

Is the outer bearing/race for an HP D30 larger then the outer bearing/race for the LP D30 found on the TJ?

The bearing/race set M86649 & M86610 is way to small, found a thread on JF which mentioned using 0280 & 0287 bearing/race.

This is the Timken bearing numbers I found on http://naxja.org
Inner bearing; HM88649 555
Inner race; HM88610 555
Outer bearing; 02872
Outer race; 02820

Does any of this sound familiar?
And does this mean the pinion shim kit that I have won't work?

Frank - The problem is all the D30 history that I have read only talks about the main components, doesn't go into bearing details.

Ended up purchasing Outer bearing; 02872/Outer race; 02820 which turns out to be correct the setup.

Auto parts stores should be able to look it up, or the Jeep dealer... You may have to know the year / make / models for them though.

Damn, didn't see this thread.

IIRC, the outer bearing/race for a HP30 and LP 30 are the same. The method of preload is what is different. HP D30 uses shims, LP30 (TJ version, NOT CJ model) uses a crush sleeve. 02872/02870 sounds about right.

Joe found out that there 2 different outer bearing/race sets. I found out that the HP I have must be from a 95/96 XJ. Also the HP has a pinion inner bearing baffle that must be installed.

So far I have learned a lot about the d30.

That baffle is called a splash shield or something like that . It helps oiling the pinion bearings. FjR68

I plugged in a '92 YJ vs a '03 TJ 30 and came up with the same numbers. I'm willing to bet that the XJ part changed after the end of the YJ / start of the TJ.

The baffle you mentioned is called a slinger.

There is a oil slinger behind the pinion head and behind the inner race shims there is a baffle that keeps oil to the bearings. Or this is what I read.

It's neat to learn about the different setups, just wish they posted why the changes.
