8.8 + tire size

Would a 8.8 with alloys handle a 39.5 tires I was told a 44 in the rear with alloys would handle 37s maybe 38s
I would think the 8.8 will be about same with 39.5 as the 44 would be with 37s or 38s

I think you're pushing the 8.8 pretty far on a tire that big... I wouldn't expect it to last too long if you push it too hard.

IMO, an 8.8 isn't that much stronger than a 44, and to be honest, has issues that make it weaker in some aspects. The tubes have been known to spin in the housing and the carrier caps flex under hard abuse. With alloy axle shafts, a Dana44 is just about equal to a 8.8. Perterson's 4 Wheel and Off Road magazine listed the Dana44 above a 8.8 for overall strength (the took into consideration the c-clip axle retention).

The 8.8 with 39.5's would definitely NOT be the same as a 44 on 37's or 38's.

There are MANY factors that need to be included. For example, my 38x15.5" Mickey Thompson Claws weigh 150 lbs each! That's 20-30 lbs MORE than a 39 or 39.5" IROK mounted on the same wheel.

IMO, Tire MASS has more to do with axle longevity than tire SIZE. When you get down to it, there isn't too much difference between a 38" and a 39" tire.


Now, my advice to you (knowing how you drive and where you drive), is to just get a Dana 60, Dana 70, or a 14 Bolt. A beefed Ford 9" would be durable too.
When push comes to shove, the 8.8 is still only a half ton axle.

Yea still a half ton axle My tubes are welded and alloys with c clip elimitator will help But Its still me driving I should be able to find a rear 60 or a 14 bolt in 6 months LOL It will be part of a Suspension over haul in December I know alot people with beater trucks that have 14 bolts I will start to look in May i will have 6 months from may to get all my parts together for my build It wont be a TJ any more LMAO

While we are on this subject... Wouldn't you kill the drive shaft/TC with that setup? Also, with the limited options in the area, would that not be considered overkill and more just for bragging about size? Myself, I am shooting to be that little guy that could! LOL

Nah. I run Spicer 1310 u-joints in my driveshafts. Some use that u-joint as the "fuse" in your driveline.

There are plenty of places to go. You're welcome to ride shotgun at the NE4W BBQ this summer.

The area (no trail names) that the NEA Fall Crawl takes place and where Baystate sometimes runs, has trails that you can barely walk on. The trails that Baystate runs there (and I mean absolutely no disrespect to small tired rigs) is the driveway to the sick stuff.

Doesn't matter... Axle was sold this AM.

It is doing a great job holding a dolly down on my garage floor, for now...
