I have a propane torch for plumbing. Would this put enough heat into the axle joint to prepare it for welding? If not, what type of torch?
thx,

Re: looking to have an AMC 20 welded
Okay...I was able to 'slip' the axle tube connections at the spring perch due to some crappy welding (that I did last year). I am not a welder, but can usually make things stick. I need to disassemble the springs, remove the axle & perches, and get a good weld on there. For now, I tacked it in p...

Re: looking to have an AMC 20 welded
So far, I managed a drive around my neighborhood. I chirped the back wheels at every stop sign like a crazed teenager...kinda felt good! Anyway, no movement in the axle joints yet. I have to go to my son's basketball game, then this afternoon I will put it on jackstands and jack the diff nose to see...

Re: looking to have an AMC 20 welded
Sorry guys...I've been working long hours at my real job this week...no time to play. Thanks for checking on me, though. Hopefully, this weekend I can try some things out. My son has been driving back/forth to school this week in the CJ without further issues. I'll give it a workout on Saturday to s...

Re: looking to have an AMC 20 welded
I put paint alignment marks on both sides inboard at at the diff-to-tube joints, and outboard at the sprngperch-to-tube joints. After my brief test drive, of course nothing moved (yet). Stay tuned...

Re: looking to have an AMC 20 welded
Frank...you have a good point. If the axle has rotated due to sheared pins at the spring perches, it would do the same thing. I am going to inspect a little further. I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion. I will make some alignment marks today at the spring perches, and axle tubes, also at the d...

Re: looking to have an AMC 20 welded
Thanks for the response, Frank... This is an '83 CJ5, with 258 c.i. six. The Jeep is still drivable. The diff was pointed up toward the body floor...not so much to make it undrivable, just enough to feel driveline vibrations on acceleration. This driveline has a cardan shaft. The diff was adjusted a...

looking to have an AMC 20 welded
I am looking for a welding shop on North Shore MA or in Southern NH that would be familiar with welding the axle tube to the AMC20 diff. I use this Jeep almost exclusively for street and light trail use. I have spun the diff. I was able to 'realign' it by putting it into reverse and bumping the clut...

offset air cleaner assy
Anyone have a Jeep offset air cleaner assy that they want to sell? I realigned my driveline angle, and now my old Edelbrock round air cleaner interferes with the brake booster. I can either fab something up as an offset, or find an old offset air cleaner for 258 ci in Jeep CJ.

Re: DANA 300 Input Shaft Oil Seal
Yeah, I followed suite this weekend. Input seal replaced, shift rods seals replaced, both yoke seals replaced. Also replaced the bottom cover gasket. Smeared a layer of RTV behind front and rear bearing housings, and re-torqued the cover bolts. I didn't want to further dismantle the transfer case. T...

Re: DANA 300 Input Shaft Oil Seal
Yep...front side yoke removed. Walked it off with a few taps to the yoke body, then repeated 180deg until loose. I want to remove the output housing to replace gasket, shift rod seals, and output shaft seals. Any thing 'scary' to remember, or just pull the ball & tension springs and remove housi...

Doug...are you doing your output shaft seals, too? What are you using for a yoke puller?

Re: DANA 300 Input Shaft Oil Seal
I could not pull the seal from the front with the shaft in place. I even tried to drill a couple of small holes in the face of the seal 'body', and pull with a pick set, pry with a small screwdriver...no go. So...I pressed out the shaft/bearing assy, then tapped out the seal from the back. It took q...

DANA 300 Input Shaft Oil Seal
I am trying to replace the oil seal at the input shaft of the DANA 300 T-Case. I have this out of the CJ and up on a bench where I can work on it. Since it's out, I decided to replace seals and gaskets. Following the guide of a Haynes manual, I removed the shaft housing around the input shaft and pu...

Re: Need transfer case diagnostic
Okay...good news is that I definately found the problem...bad news is the problem is sitting on my kitchen table. The complete output shaft of the T-4 tranny sheared off. Good news is...I have a theory of what caused it...bad news is that the T-Case linkage needs to be rebuilt. The rubber bushing th...
