Trail info / stuff
Doing some research for the trip... Trying to see if I can use Google Earth to do some planning.

I found this site with a Google Earth .kmz file you can download which has a ton of SUV / ATV trails available in Utah. I haven't got a guide book yet. If you have Google Earth you can open the file and see the trail areas marked on the map.

http://offroading.home.att.net/utah/utah.htm

The file is here:
https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/567495/UtahTrails.kmz

Unfortunately, I'm not sure any of the trails we're interested in are in this list...

I'd like to try Upper Helldorado.
Here is a little peak of what it's like. The opening scene is the entrance to the trail

Another good one:

i am going to refer to trail names and #'s from my book. these are all red trails (difficult) some are harder than others.

in no special order and open to others as well.

STRIKE RAVINE #29 , 9 miles , 3-5 hrs , south, 5

this is near/on area bfe, it has trails like helldorado and minor threat off of it for the big dogs.

SEVEN MILE RIM #9 , 12.5 miles , 3-4 hrs , west, 4

not all hard core but spots to play, very scenic views

KANE CREEK CANYON #27 , 13.7 miles , 3-4 hrs , south, 6

water crossings, narrow shelf rd, ledges, scenic

HELL'S REVENGE #32 , 6.9 miles , 4-6 hrs , south, 6

hells gate, hot tubs and escalator ! ! ! need i say more?

FINS + THINGS #33 , 9.4 miles , 3-4 hrs , south, 4

good for everyone, scenic and has some bypasses

STEEL BENDER #35 , 14.9 miles , 5-6 hrs , south, 6

bypasses for larger ledges

these next 3 connect to each other, it is recommended that we get a guide. run from 21 - 22 - 20, or 20 or 21

POISON SPIDER MESA #21 , 5.1 miles , 5

huge ledges

GOLDEN SPIKE #22 , 7 miles , 7

one of the toughest trails

GOLD BAR RIM #20 , 3.7 miles , 5

lots of ledges and views

open for input.
Day 1) Fins+Things , 4, Potato salad hill or hells revenge - hells gate and the escolator.. Close to town sight see after. sleep in, too.

Day 2) Rose garden hill, 6, and Top of the world, 4. Over 30 miles to trail head, long day. we have Dan, thinking up rose garden to top of the world.

Day 3) Kane creek canyon, 6, + Strike ravine, 5. If someone wants a short day they can split aftr 1 trail. we have Dan, not sure if he will do both trails or just 1.

Day 4) Poison spider mesa, 5, Golden spike, 7, Gold bar rim, 5. Long day. we have Dan, hope to do this. if not Hell's revenge.

Day 5) 7 Mile rim, 4. West of town to see some different views.

IS EVERY ONE ALL SET WITH THE LIST OF TRAILS OR DO WE NEED TO TWEEK IT? we have 1 day to play with the list.

Return trip advice from the past :lol:

The 3 day drive out was fine with me. Quite comfy in the Dodge.
I did break up the drive back by stopping at a couple of relatives. It really made the drive back much more enjoyable.

I agree.... Spending more time in Moab in necessary. Maybe plan on wheeling a couple of days.... take a day off... wheel a couple of more days....take a day off, etc, etc.

Def need more time. I'd probably take at least a full 2 weeks for the trip. The three days out wasn't too bad with the adrenalin pumping, but I'd need at least a four day drive back to save my knees.
Would need more drive time, can't do the 3 day cannon ball run with kids. Plan for like 9 hour drive days. Jon, I think they (wife & kids) would miss half the fun if they flew. I may have had just as much fun with the drive out as i did while in MOAB.

Rental info
http://www.moab-utah.com/farabee/

http://www.moab-utah.com/canyonlandsjeep/

http://moab-utah.com/cliffhanger/

little more info...

I called Cliffhanger Jeep rental and asked a few questions.

1) Daily rental rate in Oct is $175, but for multi-day rentals (3 or more days) $150.

2) For a multi-day rental you pickup at 7:30am the first day and drop off by 7pm the last day.

3) Right now they have TJ Rubicons (3" lift, 33x12.50 tires), but they may not in October... If they do they will have only 2. You may request them when making a reservation. Seems the trend for all the places is to update to JK / LK rentals models.

4) Any damage is paid out-of-pocket by the renter (e.g. broken axle shafts, etc...). If you can get your insurance to cover it that is fine too. Tire/glass coverage is +$20/day through them.

5) The rentals do NOT contain any recovery equipment and they don't want you doing recoveries (not surprising). If you get stuck, call them - they don't expect you to get stuck "it is all slick rock out here" <= what they said. From what I can see they only have stock recovery points on the rentals.

Additional requirements from their website:
* A major credit card
* Full coverage Insurance
* Drivers License
* 25 years of age

They also have optional collision damage waiver for $50/day with a $2000 deductible and they charge $0.35/mile over 150 miles per day.

Also as the trip gets closer we will want to identify emergency contact info for those going just in case folks dont listen to Dan. All of the above is 2yr old info. didnt go thru and check links so all pricing etc can be expected to be more $$$. If anyone wants to port over more info that you know is of value have at it... 8-)

the other thing to look into that is not listed above is the option of flying out to Moab and having your jeep freighted to the trail head.

Nothing below is in stone but its a starting point to narrow down the dates of departure and what people want to do. People may want to wheel more or less than what is stated below and you are free to come or go as you please, basically at this point its all open for discussion. September seems bad due to Fall Crawl and GAJR etc as well as a likely club run etc.

Based on today's Fall meeting I think we can discuss what we want to hit in Colorado on the way home. We can now begin discussion of dates and duration of the trip etc.

From the fall meeting I think we honed in on a early October start date that would have a tentative departure of on October 5th which would have folks in transit thur roughly the 7th. Wheels on the ground in Moab for some number of days The time in the middle can be spent sightseeing hitting more trails in the area on on the way back thru Colorado.and a return to home starting sometime around the 16th and a rough eta of the 18th home.

This is where most of us stayed last time. It's located just North of town, 2 miles south of Arches NP. We will probably stay here again, clean, quiet, and very accomodating.
http://www.moabvalleyrv.com/

As far as emergency info, we all filled out a form that listed contacts, allergies, primary care physician, etc...
2 copies were made, sealed in envelopes, then given to 2 different people to hold throughout the trip. They were given back at the end of the trip. (I think I still have mine...LOL)

Moab Valley was nice. That's where I'd plan to stay again. Cool cabins - place to park your tow rig - pool - chicks - beer (well, I did have a couple beers).

Yeah baby. I'm looking forward to going back and tucking Mark in again. :lol:
